The Future is Creative!

Creativity is for everyone!  And the future will require us to be more creative, and with new technologies.  In a recent study done in part by Microsoft, over 80% of people are asked to be creative at work on a daily or weekly basis.  And the overwhelming majority of those felt as though their jobs depend on their ability to be creative.

That's one of the many reasons we at Windover Art Center have been creating and expanding our digital art program since 2013.  With the help of Bangor Savings Bank, we purchased four iPad 2s to kickstart classes in 3D digital sculpture, electronic music, photo composites ("Photoshopping"), game design, and digital painting.  It has been a resounding success, with nearly every student at Windover participating in digital art with one art form or another.  That means we are approaching 1000 students giving the chance to be creative with the tools of the future at Windover with the help of Bangor Savings Bank!  And of course, a huge number of students use the iPads for multiple classes, meaning we've made countless monsters, songs, games, and impossible pictures.

Still, technology demands that you stay ahead of the curve.  And so this year we are excited to announce that Windover has expanded its digital art program once again!  In addition to the classic iPads and apps that Windover has always used, we are adding the just released iPad (5th generation) to our lineup.  The additional CPU and graphics power, as well as over 4x more memory, will mean that students will be able to create more complex monsters, use advanced music creation tools, craft more detailed photo composites, and experience a new level of responsiveness while painting.

Stay tuned for an even more exciting announcement next week!

Fall Foliage Family Photography

Saturday, October 10, AM and PM Sessions, Windover Art Center

This fall, join us on Windover’s 160 acres to enjoy Maine’s beautiful fall foliage.  On October 10, we invite you to walk our beautiful grounds while learning new photo tricks and techniques.  Bring your own camera or use one of ours!  Digital retouching classes and large format printing (11”x19”) will be available based on interest.

Video Game Appreciation

Saturdays, Time and Location TBD

Are you concerned that your son or daughter’s time with their favorite hobby is time wasted?  Do you wish that they would do more than play mindless games?  In our Video Game Appreciation course, we take a critical approach to playing games.  We investigate game systems and design, artwork and art styles, and storytelling and narrative. A great class for anyone who likes games and wants to get deeper into their favorite hobby!  Parents allow their children to play a variety of titles at home, and so this year we’re offering two classes to better suit what students are already playing.

Video Game Appreciation—”T” for Teen

This class will focus on games rated by the ESRB as “T” for Teen or lower.  “T” rated titles are the equivalent to a PG or a PG-13 rating for films or a TV-PG/TV-PG14 rating for television.  Games include The Stanley Parable, Journey, and Brothers: Tale of Two Sons.

Video Game Appreciation—”M” for Mature

This class will include titles that have been rated “M” for Mature by the ESRB.  While this is the equivalent to an “R” rating for movies or “TV-MA” for television, we are aware that many students are already playing “M” rated titles such as the ever-popular Call of Duty series, many of whom may not be receiving guidance from an adult.  The instructor is also aware of the concerns of many parents, and communicates clearly the content of all games to parents through email before playing.  We will NOT be playing Call of Duty, instead focusing on games such as Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, The Last of Us, and the Souls-borne games by From Software. Games are always played with the instructor to contextualize content (such as violence) and to guide the students’ understanding of such issues.

Windover App Recommendations

Windover App Recommendations

We use a lot of apps on our iPads here at Windover. Apps for music, 3D CGI, pixel art and more can be inexpensive and great ways to use technology creatively. Here's a list of some great apps you can get to bring Windover home.

Musical Apps

 Figure by Propellerhead

A great app for creating musical loops and song sketches. It has dozens of different synthesizers and tweaks to give each song a novel sound. Great for all skill levels, musicians and non-musicians alike! Worth all 99 cents!

 Auxy: Beat Studio

A great piano roll style beat sequence. Make and remix cool songs with ease!  Comes free with a number of drum, bass, and lead synths with IAPs to add more sounds.

GarageBand for iOS

A fully featured music studio for iPad. Record any number of instruments, combine and remix loops from various apps, and add our own voice. An amazing array of tools for an inexpensive recording studio on the go.

Photography Apps

Pixelmator

The closest thing to Photoshop on iPad. Retouch, add filters, and create impossible composites with multiple images. A pricier app but often on sale for $0.99.

 Hyperlapse from Instagram

Make cool time lapses without the need of a tripod. Hyperlapse uses the iPhone or iPad's sensors to detect and remove hand movement from time lapses. Record your walks, car trips, and more!  Can be rough on your battery so I recommend short sessions or keeping your device plugged in.

 Slow Shutter Cam

Create advanced shutter effects on your iPhone or iPad camera. Allows users to simulate a long exposure to blur waterfalls, make light trials, and best of all, light graffiti!  Requires a tripod or placing your device on a steady surface.

Art Apps

123D Sculpt+

Create awesome 3D sculptures in this powerful tablet app.  Create of all shapes and sizes and capture custom photographic background to bring your creatures to life!  Totally free app, with the option to purchase (expensive) 3D printed models of your artwork.

Pixely

Craft timeless pixel art creations with Pixely, an inexpensive pixel art applications.  Create canvases up to 1024x1024 and experience digital art from the past!  Can be used to make animations and tile sets for games and other applications!

Educational Apps

The Elements

A cool ebook about the elements of nature. Beautiful and educational, and regularly featured by Apple for its beautiful design and educational value.

The Elements in Action

A companion to the above app, contains cool movies and demos of the elements and emir reactions!

Disney Animated

Learn about the history of animation from one of the greatest animation houses in the world! Great examples of cell animation, flip books, and 3D computer graphics.

Tynker - Learn programming. Build Games.

A free to start game centered around programming and logic. Code your way through levels and learn to make your own games and more!  While free to start, much of Tynker's content is added through in app purchases.

Windover Endorsed Games

Pixel Press Floors

Like games?  Want to MAKE and PLAY your own games?  Pixel Press Floors is a great place to start.  Using a grid-based system (just like the original Super Mario Bros), designers create their own levels to play and share.  Learn about game design and level building while having fun playing your own games!

Prune

Watch your trees grow and help them reach the sunlight by pruning away needless branches.  But watch out for the poisonous red orbs!  A beautiful zen-puzzle game that offers a nice challenge and gorgeous visuals.  Start your bonsai garden today!

Monument Valley

One of the best puzzle games on mobile devices.  Monument Valley uses impossible, MC Escher-like geometry to create clever spatial reasoning puzzles.  Features an amazing art style, great puzzles, and a touching story of a princess and her, umm, giant yellow totem snake thing.

Stay tuned for more app recommendations!  We update our iPads regularly with new apps and games for the kids—see them here first!

AMAZING New Photo Equipment!

One of the greatest names in photography

One of the greatest names in photography

Thanks to an extremely generous donation from Peter Mallow, Windover is now home to some excellent photo equipment!  Perhaps the finest among the collection is this Hasselblad 300C with 80mm and 120mm lenses. This is a camera Mari and Isaac have dreamed of for years!  We're also excited to have a new enlarger with lenses for printing all sizes of film, from 35mm all the way up to 4"x5" negatives.

Gorgeous lenses!

Gorgeous lenses!

Two 35mm Canon cameras also join the Windover family, with an excellent 100mm macro lens.  New timers, enlarging focusing scopes, and safelights will grace our darkroom.  And a mint condition glass-bead screen will now be used in our camera obscura for brighter viewing!

Windover Week 2 2015

IMG_0009.JPG

A great week at Windover!  We made a movie about "Drew," a boy who believed he wasn't an artist because he couldn't draw.  And so he goes on a quest to learn the art of drawing.  However, he learns that there's more to art—and more to drawing!
